The Pals Journey

The Adventure Pals didn't always look how you see them now, As mentioned in our video we've spent a long time on this game and along with spending a lot of time on a project comes experience and skills. I've come a long way as an artist since then and I thought some of you may find it interesting.

Fun Fact: The player had a nose at one point.

I'll try to add onto this more in each update.

Super Cool Project

For those that haven't checked it out, definitely give Close Your a good look with your eyes open. The game recently got funded and I'm really digging the art direction the new game will have. It's deep and tasty just like a good pizza.

His so fab!

Interview with HyperDuck Soundworks
over 7 years ago – Fri, Aug 19, 2016 at 02:08:56 AM

We had a chat with our pal Chris from HyperDuck Soundworks today, the studio behind The Adventure Pals fantastic soundtrack! Check it out below.

Hyper Duck is made up of two people, how did you guys meet and how long have you been working together?

Correct! We met many years ago, when we were about 15 and 16 years old, we shared a dry drunken pot of noodles on the streets of Belfast, Northern Ireland. We both shared a love of games and music, playing quake 3 & CS 1.4 (and onwards) in Dans house every weekend, and while it wasn't clear at that point, we were already building a friendship that would produce HyperDuck SoundWorks down the line. We've been writing music and making sound for video games together since 2007 unofficially, and 2008 officially, when a game we wrote the music for called Iji was released for free, and people loved it! We've been doing it ever since.

What is your typical process for writing a track, do you have the song planned from the start or just experiment until it comes together?

It changes every time! For The Adventure Pals, we went purely on mood and one particular synth sound originally - the mood obviously, was HAPPY! Haha, and we wanted to blend a feel of exciting fantastical adventure with funky bass lines, beautiful soaring synth leads and high energy drum kits. There is always experimenting, but we always have a mood or a sound in mind that acts as the first building block - not so much to sound like that sound, but just to start somewhere, and see what new destination it leads to in terms of the sounds palette and energy.

Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations?

Oh man, that's a long list! I love a lot of jazz musicians, such as John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Esbjorn Svennson Trio, but I'm also very fond of video game composers such as the whole team behind Megaman X and X4 - those themes are unreal and have stuck with me since I was a kid. The best thing is that each game project gives me new composers and songs to fall in love with, so the list just keeps growing.

Have you guys done or considered putting out a non soundtrack album as a standalone release?

We have, and we are currently working on an EP! You can find a music video for one of the tracks 'Fellowship' below. ETA on the EP release is unconfirmed, but we're getting there!

If you have one, whats your favourite soundtrack you’ve produced for a game?

Hmmm, THE ADVENTURE PALS!? I think it's hard to pick a favourite, we had fond memories of writing the music for Zero Gear back in 2009, which was a kinda Go-Kart battle game, with some of the games very akin to Rocket League now - being so early in our career then, it was fun to let loose and be so goofy and happy with the music. I get those same feeling with The Adventure Pals, which is really nice :) I feel like we've come full circle to our ultra-happy place again.

Thanks Chris!

HyperDuck just released the soundtrack for Zero Gear on Bandcamp, download it for free here: https://hyperduck.bandcamp.com/album/zero-gear-original-soundtrack
